    Position Description - Solicitor (Level 5)

    Under the supervision of the Principal Solicitor, the Solicitor will provide a high level of supportive, plain language legal advice, information and referral to women who contact our 1800 Advice Line and through our various outreach programs. Where appropriate, ongoing casework including Court representation will be undertaken. A large percentage of calls received by WLST relate to family law, family violence, and child protection issues, however, calls can relate to any area of the law so a commitment to professional development is important.

    The provision of community legal education (CLE) workshops, drafting of law reform and lobbying submissions, along with organisational and administrative responsibilities are also a component of this position.

    What You’ll Be Doing

    • Provide high-quality legal advice, information, referral, casework, and representation to clients in both State and Federal jurisdictions, ensuring efficient, appropriate and plain language service delivery, including preparation of documents, forms and correspondence.

    • Work within WLST’s Provide an integrated and holistic client service model, where lawyers work in partnership working with social workers and financial counsellors to support clients to address both legal and non-legal needs of clients.

    • Assist to develop and co-deliver community legal education activities and resources, training and outreach programs in line with the work of the Organisation, working collaboratively with key stakeholders to deliver these services.

    • Maintain and develop relationships with key stakeholders in order to deliver outreach services to the community, with a focus on working in an integrated and collaborative manner.

    • Assist with research, preparation and presentation of law reform and lobbying submissions, working in consultation with other staff and key stakeholders to prepare submissions with reference to WLST’s Strategic Plan.

    • Be responsible for your own administrative work with the support of our paralegal team. The administrative team provides some administrative support, however the nature of funding for community legal services does not enable full administrative support.

    Position Description - Outreach Solicitor (Level 6)

    Under the supervision of the Principal or Assistant Principal Solicitor, the Solicitor will provide a high level of supportive, plain language legal information, advice and tasks for clients in outreach locations and deliver community legal education to women in rural and regional North-East Tasmania.      

    The provision of community legal education (CLE) workshops, drafting of law reform and lobbying submissions, along with organisational and administrative responsibilities are also a component of this position.

    What You’ll Be Doing

    • Visit identified outreach locations in North-East Tasmania and deliver timely and responsive legal support to clients through the provision of high-quality legal information, advice, and referral to clients in both State and Federal jurisdictions.

    • Provide efficient, appropriate and plain language services, including the preparation of documents, forms and correspondence.

    • This role may also involve some casework and representation, guided by both client need, eligibility and the capacity of the organisation.

    Position Description - Paralegal (Part time) (Level 3)

    Working within our dedicated teams, the Paralegal will have the opportunity to work closely with our legal and allied professional teams to provide integrated, trauma informed legal support to our clients. Under the supervision of the Assistant Principal Solicitor or the Principal Solicitor, the Paralegal will provide practical support to all staff to achieve the objectives of the organisation as well as supporting our clients by proactively receiving and triaging intakes into the 1800 Advice Line.

    What You'll Be Doing

    • Actively participate in intake services, including handling calls to the 1800 telephone advice line, gathering client demographic information, scheduling appointments, and accurately entering data into the legal information database.

    • Work under the guidance of the legal team to assist with taking instructions for and drafting documents, correspondence and agreements, and engaging in legal research where directed, with responsibility for document management, including proofreading, producing file notes, and attending to electronic and physical filing.

    • Produce client correspondence and prepare court documents as required, specifically in the legal areas of family law, family violence, child safety matters, migration or employment related matters. 

    • Assistance with planning and provision of community legal education sessions, workshops, conferences and service promotion.

    • Assistance with research, preparation and presentation of law reform and lobbying submissions, working in consultation with other staff and key stakeholders to prepare submissions with reference to Women’s Legal Service Tasmania’s Strategic Plan.

    You can get up to $18,529.20 in tax-free pay each year (for costs like rent, car expenses or a mortgage, and access to an entertainment benefit card), with WLST paying for all basic fees and charges.

    We offer an additional week of annual leave (pro rata) to support rest throughout the calendar year, and up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for those who are expanding their family who have worked with us for over 12 months.
