Launch of new consent resources – Media Release

Helping young people understand consent and the law

In the lead-up to International Women’s Day, Women’s Legal Service Tasmania is delighted to launch a suite of resources for young people that provide information around consent and the law.

The resources comprise a series of downloadable fact sheets and short videos which provide information on awkward, but important, topics such as:

Understanding consent
The age of consent
Consent, sex and intoxication Non-fatal strangulation Stealthing

To enhance community accessibility, the fact sheets are currently also available in Arabic, and will soon be available in Hindi, Nepali, Persian, Chinese and Tagalog.

These resources, created with specialist input from Laurel House, aim to provide knowledge and tools for young people to navigate relationships in a healthy and respectful way, in formats that are comfortable and non-judgemental.

“It’s very easy for information around issues like sex and consent to be misrepresented or misinterpreted, and sometimes young people don’t feel comfortable asking questions. When you add the law into the equation, things become even more difficult to navigate, so we wanted to provide really clear information in a way that is easy to access, understand and digest,” said Women’s Legal Service Tasmania’s Director of Programs, Siobhan Mackay.

“Educating young people around consent helps to dismantle harmful myths, encourages open communication, and encourages mutual respect. By incorporating engaging and age-appropriate resources, we want to empower young people to understand boundaries, their legal rights and responsibilities, and recognise harmful behaviours while developing a culture of safety and respect.”
